Fidelity Investments Import Instructions

TradeLog™ supports two different methods of importing your trade history from FIDELITY:

brokerConnect™ Import  |  Web Import

NOTES:

  1. Fidelity's P&L statement grossly overstates the disallowed wash sale loss amount.  The statement erroneously totals up each and every wash sale that occurs throughout the year.
See: How wash sales affect me.   That is just one reason why you should NEVER rely on broker provided P&L statements for your taxes. See: Trader Tax Misconceptions - Broker provided G&L reports.

If you or your accountant used the Fidelity P&L statement to file your previous year's tax return, then you may have losses that were disallowed for last year and these losses may be attached to shares that you no longer own. There is no method in TradeLog to make an such an adjustment to recoup these losses. You will need to consult a tax advisor or CPA that understands the wash sale rule who can assist you in the proper method of recouping these erroneous disallowed losses.  You may or may not have to amend you previous year's tax return.

  2. Cusips - Fidelity occasionally replaces some stock trades and expired option trades older than one month with cusip numbers, rather than using the stock ticker symbol or option description.  These cusip numbers must be changed in TradeLog to the appropriate stock ticker symbol (ie: DELL) or TradeLog option long format (ie: DELL DEC07 30 CALL) for all options.

Any easy way to identify what stock or option is represented by the cusip is to look up the trade on your monthly statement to see what you actually traded.

  3. Options traders - Fidelity uses stock descriptions when identifying options, and these must be changed to the underlying stock ticker symbol using Edit, Change Stock Descr to Ticker Symbol

(ie: CONTINENTAL AIRLS MAR07 50 CALL must be changed to CAL MAR07 50 CALL)

This way TradeLog can properly calculate wash sales between CAL stock trades and CAL option trades.

Note: If you are using your social security number as your Fidelity Customer ID you will need to change this first before you can use brokerConnect. Fidelity has instituted new security measures and will reject your login when using brokerConnect.

General Procedure:
(Limited to the last 553 days, 90 days at a time)

1.  Run TradeLog and click on the Fidelity Imp button.

2.  A popup dialog box will ask whether you want to import using brokerConnect™ or to import from the Web.  Click YES to import using brokerConnect™.

3.  A popup dialog box allows you to enter your Social Security Number or Customer ID, your PIN, and your Account Number

The From date pick box shows the from date that will be used for this import. You can use the default date or if you want to import a specific month you can select the first of the month date from the drop down calendar.

The default import date range is 90 days.  However, if you have a large number of transactions Fidelity's server may hang, in which case you will have to select 1 Month to import one month at a time.

Clicking on the Timeout button allows you to increase the time TradeLog will wait for a response. This may be necessary if you have a slow internet connection.

This information gets encrypted and is stored in your TradeLog data file.  It only needs to be entered once for each brokerage account.

The next time you click the Fidelity Imp button your information will be displayed in the box and you simply click the OK button to continue.

4.  Click OK and TradeLog will connect to the Fidelity web site to get your most current trade information.

Please do not click your mouse or press any keys until your data is imported!

5.  Your trades will be automatically imported and matched.
