Dividends are defined by the IRS as distributions of money, stock, or other property a corporation pays you because you own stock in that corporation.  For active trading and investing purposes, we are only concerned with four primary types of dividends: 

Cash Dividends

Stock Dividends and Stock Splits

Dividend Reinvestments (DRIPs)

Stock Spin-Offs and Mergers
